Closing the Clay Chapter

The Tennis Recruiting Network covered the Clay Courts from three perspectives this week. My story on the Boys 18s & 16s was posted today, Julie Wrege was in Memphis for the Girls 18s and filed this story, and Sonny Dearth of the Newport News Daily Press provided coverage of the girls 16s final between Brooke Bolender and Sloane Stephens.

Also, I've added a poll on the left sidebar. The first question seeks your opinion on the best month to hold the Clay Courts.

a comment about the poll:
july is ridiculously hot and it is during the pros grass court/hard court season so why should the juniors have clay courts then? May is when the professional clay court tournaments rap-up so why not have it at the end of may when its not as hot? the pros at roland garros do not play in 100 degree weather....its a win/win situation

nothing wrong with playing it in the heat but alot of kids skip it to get ready for hardcourts because they dont like the surface and its timing is bad. right before hardcourts. put it in june to allow more time for hardcourt preparation.

April and May both get in the way of school and the high school season. This may not affect the top guys who usually don't compete in high school and are traveling anyway so school isn't as big a deal for them to miss, but the majority of the players in these tournaments do have to deal with it.

Plus, if Clay Courts aren't in the summer, what do the kids really have to look forward to for the summer, hard courts? Bottom line, we can debate this as long as you all want to, but the truth of the matter is that it will not change. Period.

i would like to get everyones opinion on the clays this year in Florida, granted it was the first year.. but overall do we really think that it could even compare to what they were like in Rockville?
