Top 16 Seeds Advance to Athens in D1 Women's NCCAs

Most of the second round of Women's NCAA regionals were completed this afternoon, and there weren't any surprises--all 16 top seeds moved on to Athens. UCLA (12) and Cal (10) were the only Top 16 seeds to drop more than one point, losing two to Florida State and Arizona State respectively. So the drama that accompanied the men's second round yesterday, when three of the duals came down to the final match, was absent.

The ultimate cliffhanger was last night's Wake Forest - Clemson men's match, which if you read the comments, you know went to the Demon Deacons in a third set tiebreak at No. 3 singles. (Austin kept track of it like I did, via the live scoring on the Wake website). The Greensboro News-Record has this account of how Andrew Hamar got Wake Forest to the final 16 for the first time in the program's history.

In junior news, the French Open acceptances have been published, with five U.S. boys and five U.S. girls in the main draw.

The boys are Kellen Damico, Rhyne Williams, Johnny Hamui, Mateusz Kecki and Austin Krajicek. The U.S. girls are Julia Cohen, Madison Brengle, Reka Zsilinszka, Mallory Cecil and Veronica Li.

Ryan Harrison won his second straight ITF tournament today, a Grade 4 in Waco. He won the Grade 5 in Spring, Texas the previous week, a day before turning 15. Fifteen-year-old CC Sardinha was the girls winner in Spring, while Alexandra Anghelescu, also 15, took the girls title in Waco.

It always seems like the women's bracket goes to form, at least for the 1st 2 rounds. Don't think there is as much parity and depth in the women's game, as there is in the men's game, which is why we see more upsets on the men's side.

That said, I think the women's tournament will be a great one to watch in Athens cause I think the title is up for grabs. I can see 8 or 9 different teams winning it, but also wouldn't be surprised if the last teams standing were Stanford, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida.

This probably isn't the right place for my comment but I just have to say how much I'm enjoying being able to watch on TV some of the Pac-10 tennis matches.

I am quite unfamiliar with college tennis but being able to watch it on TV has been a revelation. Matt Bruch in particular has impressed me. Here's the website for Pac-10 if anybody is interested:
